Go Centennial Pilot Program Reduced Wait Times from Dry Creek Light Rail Station from 2 Hours to 5.25 Minutes (Centennial, COLO) Last August, the City of Centennial launched Go Centennial, a streamlined, innovative and tech-savvy approach for people to get to and from the Dry Creek Light Rail Station in Centennial. Go Centennial was a six-month pilot program that combined a multi-modal trip-planning mobile app and a fully-subsidized ridesharing service, providing a solution to the first and last mile challenge of getting to or from transit. This pilot program tested an entirely new platform for seamless door-to-door transit planning that streamlined information across multiple transportation modes. The Go Denver app, which supported Go Centennial, was the first multi-modal app of its kind to feature in-app booking with Lyft.
The Centennial Innovation Team (i-team), funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, developed the Go Centennial pilot concept and led development of the implementation plan by securing private-public partnerships with Conduent, Lyft, Via and the Denver South Transportation Management Association. Go Centennial was also the first public-private partnership in the nation to fully subsidize Lyft Line rides for transit commuters and offer multiple ways to book and pay. Go Centennial was designed as an experiment to test transit ridership demand and per-trip costs for personalized on-demand transit connections. Last week, the City’s i-team released the final report for the Go Centennial pilot program highlighting the partnerships with Lyft, Conduent, Via and CH2M. Key findings from the report include:
The subsidizing of the Lyft Line rides proved to be cost effective, while there was little demand for the accessible vehicle. As service areas for future pilot programs expand, the report shows cost per accessible rides to be reduced. The final report includes lessons learned throughout the six-month pilot program such as expansion of the 3.75 square-mile service area, more integration with the Regional Transportation District (RTD), technology improvements, enhancing the user experience and additional marketing among others. Quantitative and qualitative results are also included. In total, the pilot provided 1,302 trips for 127 riders of which 36 percent were new to using a ridesharing service. Sixty-nine percent of riders used the program more than once. And ridership remained stable for the existing Call-n-Ride service, managed by RTD, which shows the Go Centennial program brought new light rail riders. “I am very pleased with the outcome of the Go Centennial pilot program, as it was the first of its kind. Transportation is an important issue to our citizens and the challenge of getting to and from light rail stations is a common obstacle for many. This program provided an opportunity to examine the willingness of people to try convenient and low cost ridesharing service was available to them,” said Centennial Mayor Cathy Noon. “I am encouraged by the results of the Go Centennial program, and what they indicate in terms of creating a better, more seamless travel experience for Centennial commuters," said Don Hubicki, General Manager, Conduent, Public Sector, Transportation. “Presenting multi-modal mobility options, via tools such as the Go Centennial App, enhances the end user experience. It encourages a modal shift – and we’ve done this with the City of Centennial in an innovative and efficient way. This pilot has helped pave the way for other cities to explore how best to improve access for the aging population and those living in underserved communities to affordable and accessible mass transit options.” “We are happy this initial pilot program produced such positive results. Through strong coordination across multiple public and private partners, the City of Centennial and Lyft were able to dramatically lower the cost of providing first and last mile transportation and do it with shorter wait times and broad customer satisfaction. Based on the results from this limited engagement, we plan to continue to improve and expand our transit partnerships," said Gabe Cohen, General Manager for Lyft Denver. Go Centennial was built on a sub-set of the Go Denver smartphone app platform, powered by Conduent. Through this app, eligible users could plan and book free Lyft Line rides connecting them with Southeast Light Rail at the Dry Creek Station. Lyft Line rides were free Monday through Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. from August 2016 to February 2017. As required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, an accessible vehicle with a ramp and a trained driver, provided by Via, were present in the service area during all hours of operation to provide service for seniors and people with limited mobility. This service could be scheduled through the Lyft app or by telephone through the City’s Citizen Response Center. “Via was thrilled to partner with the City of Centennial on this pilot project and would look forward to continuing the partnership should the program continue in any way,” says Richard Burns, Director of Operations for Via. The City of Centennial and the Denver South Transportation Management Association each set aside $200,000 to subsidize Lyft Line rides for the program. Ride cost for the six-month pilot was $60, 770.
